The Jacob & Co. Opera Godfather collection stands as an extraordinary tribute to the iconic film, The Godfather, marking a unique collaboration between Jacob & Co. and Paramount Pictures. This high-complication watch, part of the Opera series, celebrates the film's cultural impact over the last five decades by capturing its spirit, themes, and recognisable motifs. As a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola's cinematic masterpiece, the Opera Godfather edition seamlessly combines horology with film heritage, resulting in a timepiece that both honours and captivates the essence of The Godfather in miniature form.
Design Inspiration And Language
The watch's design is laden with symbolic references to the film, making it a miniature showcase of Italian-American crime drama and Jacob & Co.’s advanced craftsmanship. Within the 49mm case, a sculpture of Don Vito Corleone sits as the watch’s centrepiece, embodying Marlon Brando's iconic character. The design extends with puppeteer strings, a hallmark from the movie’s poster, along with musical elements inspired by Nino Rota’s haunting score. Through a miniature piano and violin-shaped crank, the watch plays the film’s theme music on demand, an intricate feature that adds a personal, interactive dimension to the timepiece. The collection includes various iterations, with the 50th Anniversary model being a prime example. This edition incorporates refined details like a red rose symbolising Don Vito’s boutonnière and laser-engraved scenes from The Godfather along the side of the white gold case.
For the first time in haute horology, this technique allows for photo-realistic engravings on a curved surface, an exceptional feat requiring remarkable skill and innovation. The watch also features two barrels inscribed with memorable quotations from the film, creating a truly immersive experience for enthusiasts and collectors alike. A triple-axis flying tourbillon powers the timepiece. Given the energy demands of the music box and the rotating mechanism, the timepiece is manually wound using the violin-like crank at three o'clock. At the same time, the time-setting crown is located discreetly on the caseback. By merging complex watchmaking techniques with legendary film elements, the brand have created a piece that is both a testament to the craft and a tribute to cinematic history.
