New Top Time And A New Ambassador For Breitling: Austin Butler, The Face Of Top Time B31
Debuted in 1964, the Breitling Top Time watch was initially designed as a chronograph that would appeal to young, energetic individuals. Previously, chronographs were only used as professional instruments, but Breitling recognised their potential as elegant accessories. Top Time quickly became popular among automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts in the 1960s. The watch remained in production until the late 1970s, surviving a tough era when quartz watches gained popularity. After many years, Top Time was revived in 2020 under the direction of new CEO Georges Kern, aiming to restore its original charm and historical significance.
Design And Craftsmanship
The original Top Time models showcased a monocoque case for enhanced water resistance and mushroom-style chronograph pushers. The dials provided various chronograph scales, including tachymetre, pulsometre, and decimal scales tailored for professionals. The distinctive "panda" dial design, featuring contrasting subdials, became a signature look of the series. The 2020 limited-edition "Zorro" model presents a bold black-and-white dial pattern reminiscent of a domino mask. The Classic Cars and Café Racer series continue this tradition, drawing inspiration from iconic automobiles and motorcycles.
The 2020 reissue features the Breitling calibre 23, an automatic movement with a 48-hour power reserve. Building on this, the Classic Cars collection introduced in 2021 showcases ETA-based calibre 25 movements, offering precision and reliability. In 2023, the Top Time was updated with the in-house calibre B01, offering a 70-hour power reserve and COSC certification. The B21 models, with their chronograph-tourbillon combination, come in black ceramic, titanium, and bronze and feature unique dial designs inspired by classic cars. This blend of modern technology and vintage design elements ensures that these Breitling watches remain timeless in the brand's lineup.
